Why is it Special?
Designed by Finnish designer Alvar Aalto and first released at the 1937 Paris World’s Fair, the inspiration for the Aalto vase is still a mystery. Some say the origin of the fluid form is based on Aalto’s sketches entitled “The Eskimo Woman’s Leather Breeches.” Others believe that the form is derived from the fjords of the Finnish landscape. Regardless of how the form came to be, the Aalto vase has become an iconic form in design. It also inspired a piece by Vancouver designer Tobias Wong.
